Women's Day Special Exhibition:She Has Never Been Absent
Women’s experiences and stories play an essential role in shaping society. Gender historian Gail Hershatter emphasises that women are active participants in social and national development, rather than passive figures in history.
In recent years, gender historians and researchers have worked to restore women’s names, experiences, and contributions in historical narratives—for example, by foregrounding the original name of “Madame Curie”, Maria Skłodowska, and reassessing the leadership of figures such as Corazon Aquino and Wan Azizah binti Wan Ismail.
In contemporary society, women’s lives are closely connected to national development, social transformation, and public issues. However, contributions related to women’s labour, caregiving responsibilities, and health are often overlooked within social systems and policies.
In Malaysia, this commitment to women’s development is reflected through the establishment of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), which strengthens women’s rights, opportunities, and participation in national progress.
This exhibition showcases selected titles from the Library’s collection on women in literature, history, society, politics, and medicine. Through diverse perspectives and women’s stories, it invites visitors to reflect on the significance of women’s contributions in shaping society.
